News and Comment by KT:
Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) natural resources minister Ashti Hawrami has announced that the KRG will take over responsibility for paying the liabilities owed to oil companies operating in Kurdistan. Two months ago the Iraqi government refused to pay liabilities of $1.5 billion to foreign companies, under the pretext that the KRG had signed oil contracts without the permission of central government.
The latest statement by Ashti Hawrami, the man behind the oil industry in Kurdistan, gives an indication of the resources that the KRG has at its disposal to potentially sort out all the outstanding issues in the south of Kurdistan.
This news will be a big relief to all the oil companies operating in Kurdistan.

Extremely interesting – if true! There seems to be no confirmation of this story anywhere else on the web.
Would be a giant step forward – part of a deal with Baghdad?
necessary to move forward and bring the oil to the customeres for the benefit of all.. 🙂
I just read this as a unilateral decision taken by the KRG. I don’t interpret this as a deal involving Baghdad. Any deal with the KRG and Baghdad would be a great step forward. How do you feel this may involve Baghdad.
Thanks
For such a significant piece of news, it would be expected that news agencies would also be reporting the announcement. Whilst in no way questioning the integrity of the report.
Could the Tribune provide further information as to when the minister made the statement and if the KRG is to report the statement on their website.
Thanks

Shwan, the link is in arabic (?) I would love to see some confirmation on this as it would be great news.
Very interesting indeed! How I interpret this is more independence from Baghdad that potentially become contentious enough for KRG to threat and/or declare independence. And, in the eyes of companies, perhaps also internationally, KRG would be deemed reaponsible and trustworthy.
More Information would be greatly helpful.
