Four KRG opposition Members of Parliament announce their resignation

By Harem Karem:

In a statement today, 9 August, four members of the Kurdistan Regional Parliament on the Gorran (Change) List have presented their resignation to the Speaker of the House, Dr Kemal Kerkuki.

Dr Shaho Said, Dr Parihan Qoblay, Dr Jafar Ali and Dr Zana Raouf (left to right in the photo) have made a statement saying that their resignation is in protest against the current dysfunctional system, and the way in which the ruling parties’ intervention has largely disabled Parliament and the Government prevents them from doing what they are elected to do.

They stress that, since 17 February 2011, there has been a chain of killings of protesters by the ruling parties’ militias but still no one has been brought to justice. “We have decided to resign because this system does not allow us to represent our constituents”, they said.

They have refused to take up the financial bonuses and other privileges currently given to MPs of two year’s standing, arguing that this is yet another waste of the people’s money.

Finally, they reassured their voters that this decision was in their best interests and that they will continue to work with Gorran to fight corruption and pursue change.
