‘Wusha’s philosophy and purpose is to increase freedom in Kurdistan’

Babakir Drey, Head of the Wusha Corporation, was interviewed by Harem Karem:

HK: What measures have you taken to preserve Wusha’s independence?

BD: Since it was established, Wusha has been independent. There is no pressure on our staff to think and work within the boundaries of Gorran (Change) or any other party. It’s obvious that no media organisations in the region are independent. But allow me to define Wusha’s independence. In terms of political ideology, anyone who works for Wusha Cooperation knows that it’s affiliated to the opposition. Its founder and owner, Newshirwan Mustafa, is the leader of Gorran, the main opposition party in the Kurdistan region. In terms of its financial support, Wusha has been funded by its owner from its establishment, but now it is also supported by the Gorran MPs in the Baghdad and Erbil parliaments. Our philosophy and purpose is to increase freedom in Kurdistan and work towards administrative and economic reform. No matter whether it’s the opposition or ruling parties conducting these reforms, we will support them.

HK: Wusha Corporation considers itself a bridge between Kurds and the international community, but neither any of your news websites, nor your televised news (KNN satellite channel) and radio (Dangi Gorran) have an English version: why is this?

BD: In all fairness, we have made serious efforts to build that bridge between Kurds and the international community. We invested a substantial amount of money to get KNN TV back on ‘Hotbird’ in order for our viewers from Europe and other continents to be able watch our programmes. Thus I can say that every piece of news that has reached the KNN team and was of importance we have transmitted. Despite the fact that we have tried our best, there are shortcomings and we are in the process of constant improvement.

At sbiey.com we have paid more attention to the Kurds abroad and their affairs. Sbiey is one of the best and most read Kurdish news websites in the world and it publishes views from across the spectrum. ‘Rojname’ newspaper also publishes news and articles about developments outside Kurdistan, namely articles by prominent writers such as Baxtyar Ali, Mariwan Qane, and Aras Fatah – they are all based in Europe. At our radio station (Dangi Gorran) we have not been able to transmit outside Kurdistan because it was originally established for internal listeners but, if anyone wishes to listen to our radio from outside Kurdistan, it’s available on the website. All our departments have different tasks and we do not wish to increase their tasks to a level where they are unable to operate sufficiently.

HK: Do you plan to develop Gorran’s grassroots organisation and democratic internal structures?

BD: This question relates to Gorran’s political agenda as a movement. We are in the process of developing our grassroots and democratic internal structures; it’s one of our main tasks.

HK: The KRG representative in Tehran, Nazim Dabbagh, told ‘Rudaw’ in an interview that Gorran leaders and Iranian officials have secretly met: what is your response?

BD: In the past few years, the Iranian ambassador has visited the Gorran leader Newshirwan Mustafa at Gorran’s headquarters. We even had him on KNN in one of our programmes. Why do we need to meet with them secretly?

HK: How should the KRG be responding to Iran’s border incursions and bombardment?

BD: I believe the Kurdistan Regional Government has recently tried to stop the bombardment. It was a good move.

HK: Will Gorran lead an active campaign for a democratic constitution?

BD: Yes, we have in the past been actively involved in this campaign and there are promises to change the constitution if the ruling parties do not change their mind on certain issues.

This Wusha issue is nothing but a big joke and shows that the current kurdish society in S-Kurdistan is ready to swallow anything even if it doesn’t make any sense.

1- Just to start with, doing hard core political business and pretending as if it was just a “company” is a deceipt of the kurdish public.

2- starting Wusha with a gift of 25 million Dollars from his excellency Mam Jalal is another mind blower that can only happen in Kurdistan.
Just imagine Hillary Clinton would decide to retire and concentrate on “doing her american people good” and President Obama would give her a $25m gift for her “long and tireless work” for the american politics and society.

And imagine Miss Clinton would get a few of those expensive buildings around Capitol Hill to have a place to stay and work.
And imgaine her critisizing and attacking Obama everyday on her newly established TV & radio stations, blaming Obama for being corrupt because he is giving away gifts for his allies.

Imagine further Miss Hillary was an old veteran of some clandestine CIA operations group, having assasinated dozens, looted and destroyed numerous homes and places and she would still blame Obama and his friends for not being legal and not abiding by the rule of law.

There is a kurdish saying that goes like this:
The wolve told the shepard he can have a rest because it will now be looking after the sheep.

Wusha and Gorran ladies and gentlemen are doing nothing else than that.

And regaarding kurdish fellows whio rightly are fed up with so much wrong in the KRG and the society, one can only say:

It is too simple for the critical people among us Kurds to think:
“The enemy of my enemy is my friend”.

Kurdistan’S complex reality is not as easy as that.

the other most important quetion for Babakr Dray is this :for how long have the Gorran movement delayed in preparation of Annual conference .Otherwise what is the different between PUK,KDP and Gorran? Gorran has to make sure their committee leadership is elected.Gorran movement deserves young and talented leadership.
