No power will silence me, says Mustafa Ismail

By Supportkurds.org:

Syrian authorities talk about reform at the same time as depriving Mustafa Ismail of civil rights and seizing his assets.

Mustafa Ismail – a prominent Kurdish lawyer, poet, blogger, writer and democracy activist – has released a statement reporting that the Public Prosecutor of Kobani has implemented a court order of the military prosecutor in Aleppo divesting him of his civil rights.

Mustafa’s money and assets have been seized in accordance with paragraph two of the verdict issued against him inآ the criminal case no. 790 of 2010, which also contained a prison sentence of two and a half years under Articles 278 and 267 of the Syrian Penal Code, in the first clause.

He was arrested on December 12, 2009 solely for the peaceful expression of his opinions. Amnesty International and Defence International raised campaigns after he disappeared in the detention system of Syria. Mustafa spent eighteen months in prison before Legislative Decree no. 61 of 2011, which was introduced on 1 June 2011. This Decree included  an amnesty in relation to variety of Articles relating to criminal offences, and gave rise to his release from Aleppo Central Prison.

The military prosecutor in Aleppo directed the Public Prosecutor in Kobani to divest Mustafa Ismail of his civil rights and to seize his money and assets. This occurred amid promises by the Syrian authorities to conduct democratic reforms in the country so as to end the growing crisis arising from the people’s popular revolution. The Administrative Officers served him with the notice at the same time as the first session took place, at the Hotel Sahara in Damascus, of the State-sponsored consultative meeting for a national dialogue, where Vice President Faruq al-Shara told the media that it was not reasonable to punish a person on account of his views!

Mustafa Ismail said: ‘This personal experience reveals the mentality of the Syrian authorities who turn a blind eye to the abuse that they instigate themselves against all the seeds of difference in Syrian society, and their violence towards the free voice of democracy, and it exposes the falsehood of their claims to be working for a transition to democratic change. This is my first-hand experience, not just the word on the street.’

‘This step by the military prosecutor in Aleppo, is contrary to all international covenants and conventions signed by the Syrian government as a member of the international community, and contrary to its obligations under the instruments of the UN, especially the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

He continued: ‘Despite all of this, I announce my intention to continue writing in stronger and clearer terms, and I declare that I will continue my activity in public affairs. There is no power in this world that will deter me from my writing, and declaration of my views, and from engaging in public affairs.’
