Rojan, Live in Concert, August 2, 2015, 7:00 PM

Wilshire Ebell Theater

4401 W 8th St, Los Angeles, CA 90005

Rojan, the folk diva of Kurdish music, an impassioned singer, and explorer of different styles and genres of Kurdish and classical Persian music, and an advocate for women’s rights returns to Los Angeles for an intriguing performance on Aug 2. Musically Rojan explores the nexus between the Kurdish mystical and nostalgic music with lyrical compositions; in Persian she sings classical and meditative songs, as a conscientious performer, her work is also imbued with political protest and rebellion against tyranny. With songs performed in different dialects of Kurdish and instrumentation her work can be characterized as neo-follkloric; her contralto voice reverberates with the diverse mysterious, meditative, mystical, and lyrical musical traditions. Rojan returns to Los Angeles after a long hiatus to bring her unique voice and impassioned music to her fans and the larger Kurdish diasporic communities.

The event, directed by Shahin Yousefzamani, a Kurdish composer, will blend Kurdish and Middle Eastern instruments such as Daf (Hahar Zahawy), Baghlama( Dimitis Mahli ), Kemancheh ( Navid Kandelousi), Santur ( Hamid Saeidi) with Western instruments such as viola ( Ramin Yousefzamani), percussion ( Greg Ellis), bass( Ali Sanaei), and woodwinds ( Pedro Eustache).

I ask Kurdish popular singers in U.S., European and Scandinavian countries to visit Kurdistan and hold concerts more often over there for youths. Thanks.
