Opposition warns ruling parties on continued local elections delay

Opposition meeting, 9 June 2012

The three opposition parties held a meeting today in Sulaymani over the issue of delayed local elections to councils in the cities and towns of Kurdistan.

The original date for the local council elections was January 30 2009: Three years have passed but still no new date has been set.

The two ruling parties, the PUK and KDP, are deliberately delaying the process under various pretexts, including the claim that the Elections High Commission is not ready and has some organisational problems, but in fact the main reasons are political:

  1. The PUK and KDP know that any elections to local councils would result in a landslide victory for the opposition and they don’t want to demoralise their members and followers in advance of general elections due next year.
  2. The two ruling parties have not yet decided whether to preserve their electoral alliance in the local elections.

The opposition has issued warning statements to the ruling parties. First, it urges them not to discourage the people by adandoning the recent tradition of elections in Kurdistan. Second, it wants the government to implement Law no. 3, 2009, by holding the local council elections as soon as possible in order to prevent political crises and mayhem in the south of Kurdistan.
