New Book: Helen Ghassemlou’s Memoir in English – ‘Love Against All Reason’

By Sissy Danninger:

The reminiscences of Dr Abdol Rahman Ghassemlou’s widow, Helen Krulich-Ghassemlou, are now available in English as well: “Love against all Reason – A European Woman Involved in the Kurdish Fight for Freedom in Iran” was published by LIT Verlag, Zurich branch in August 2017. The book is available in altogether four languages now (see below for details of how to order copies).

The French original appeared in 2011 in Paris. Meanwhile Kurdish, Turkish and German translations have been published as well. A Persian version was printed clandestinely by an unknown publisher. Thus it is practically unavailable.

The enlarged English edition is based on the French one and reedited by the author. It contains some new chapters about the author’s childhood and other amendments.

The back cover gives some more details as a brief introduction in order to rouse the potential readers’ interest even if they are not familiar with Kurdish affairs and the brutal assassination of Dr Ghassemlou in Vienna in 1989:

As the translator of the German version, published by LIT Verlag Vienna in 2014, I am happy to be able to announce the new English publication now. “Love against all Reason” is a paperback with 264 pages and costs 34,90 €. Orders should be addressed by email to the Zurich branch of LIT at zuerich@lit-verlag.ch

Thanks for writing about the English publication of “Love Against all Reason”. Not only Dr Abdol Rahman Ghassemlou’s ultimate sacrifice for the freedom of Kurds and Helen Krulich-Ghassemlou’s involvement in it, even the ‘idea’ of a free Kurdistan is largely unknown even now in many parts of the world. As a journalist and writer from India, I can vouchsafe this, as most of our media is focusing only on the problems and inhuman treatments met with the migrants from Turkey, Syria etc. It was only when the ISIS was driven out successfully from Mosul, Iraq that some of them even wrote about the front line fight given by the Kurds. Now, as we have this English version of the memoir, I hope it would help to propagate the rightful cause of freedom fight of the Kurds in those countries where English is more or less the first or the second language. There is this advantage of translating it to many other languages too from English. Thanks once again, KS Raman
