Kurd flag flies in Syrian revolt

Kurdish red, yellow and green mixed with the Syrian flag in Derbassieh yesterday, in support of people across Syria who have been martyred and the campaign for democratic change, reports Gemyakurda.net and Supportkurds.org

And, in possibly the first attack directed specifically against Kurds during this uprising, witnesses said dozens were injured when police and thugs loyal to Assad used batons and tear gas against protesters in the mainly Kurdish city of Qamishli in the north east of Syria.

The protestors were demanding political freedom and an end to discrimination against Syria’s one million Kurdish people, as well as expressing their solidarity with protesters across the country.

Across Syria at least 11 were killed by security forces yesterday as hundreds of thousands took to the streets. In Aleppo, Syria’s second city, unarmed army cadets marched with civilians against the Government and activists are reporting military defections in Homs and Albu Kamal.

Meanwhile the Guardian reports that the bloodstained and beleagured President Assad plans soon to make his fourth speech since the uprising began, in which he may announce the abandonment of article eight of the constitution stipulating the Baath Party’s leading role in the state.  Assad is also said to be considering announcing Presidential elections in a bid to end the sustained popular revolt.
