KRG supine response to Iranian bombardment of our border

By Mufid Abdulla:

Local newspapers have unveiled what appears to be secret communications between the KRG and the Iranian government. The KRG is denying the accuracy of the leaked documents and accusing the papers of lying and deceit. The documents refer to a secret agreement between the KRG and the Iranian regime on the issue of PJAK.

Essentially the KRG appears to have given Iran permission to cross the border into Kurdistan to chase PJAK. Iran has been conducting an intensive bombardment of our South Kurdistan border on the pretext of chasing the guerrillas of PJAK, the Free Life Party of Kurdistan ( a sister party in Iran of the Turkey-based PKK). This news will shock Kurds and freedom-loving people everywhere because the Iranian regime is infamous for its brutality.

The Iranian bombardment has caused a lot of damage to the properties of people in the villages near Sydakan near the Khandeel Valley. Gorran MPs have visited the area and expressed their surprise that the government is so quiet about this outrageous attack on our territory.

The KRG response up to now has been supine. In a crisis such as this, the KRG should provide clear leadership and strategy, reframe the issue and put the Iranian regime on the defensive.  Iran is ruled by a bunch of thugs who one day threaten Israel, another day threaten the whole world and today want to invade Kurdistan. Any secret agreement that sanctions their aggression is a betrayal.

What the KRG should have done:

1.They needed to understand the full dimensions of the problem, assemble all the facts and make this information available to everyone, including the Opposition.

2. The KRG should have called for mass demonstrations in the towns and cities of Kurdistan to show the anger of the people at the Iranian attacks on the border villages.

We can conclude with two points.

First, there is a tangible sense that the Kurdish people in the south of Kurdistan are approaching a moment of truth, and yet the KRG leaders seem either unwilling or incapable of rising to the challenge. The people of south Kurdistan have suffered enough armed conflicts and do not want to be drawn into another one.

Second, Talabani is President of Iraq and Barzani is President of Kurdistan. Both have a voice and they should use it to demand immediate action from the Iranian rulers to end their aggression.

what’s really funny is that, during the recent uprising in Sulaimani and the few gatherings in Hawler (Erbil), the tribal KRG, especially Barzanis, were connecting Iran to the protests and actually warning the west about that! The west listened and believed it! That was at least one reason why the west was silent during the uprising; they simply thought Iran was behind it! The Barzanis and Talbanis are famous of serving enemies of Kurds against their own people. The act of treachery is in the blood of these tribes. I am not a fan of leftist organisations such as PKK and its relatives but, in order to eradicate tribalism in Kurdistan we need radical organisations. Just like in the past leftists of Sulaimani used tribes, including Barzanis, as their arm forces. Today we need leftists to get rid of them. After that, we have to seek a way to get rid of leftists.

That secret agreement would definitely compel other nations not to intervene in the process. Because of the division among political parties, KRG is powerless even in forming mass demonstrations. For instance, PUK is capable of bringing only the old Peshmerga to the street because it lost the street-support especially in Sulaymania and obviously it can’t function freely in Hawler. KDP will wait for the US, Turkey or Iraq to tell them (KDP) what to do and it (KDP) will act accordingly.

Kurdish populace is fed up with repeated KRG’s duplicity and hypocrisy. Enough is enough.

Merge both Peshmarge administrations ASAP, de-politicize ’em and let ’em take care of affairs pertaining to our national defense, not a set of corrupt politicians or bureaucrats.
