KCK operations in full swing: Police detain Van Mayor

Law enforcement officials took Bekir Kaya, the Mayor of the southeastern province of Van, and five other district mayors into custody yesterday, as well as 10 members of the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) as part of the probe into the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK).

Police conducted searches at a number of homes and offices, including the home of Van Mayor Bekir Kaya, as part of the operations against the KCK. They then proceeded to detain Mayor Kaya and five other district mayors yesterday morning.

Law enforcement officials detained Van Mayor Bekir Kaya, Edremit District Mayor Abdülkerim Sayan, Özalp District Mayor Murat Durmaz, Muradiye District Mayor İzzet Çelik, Çaldıran District Mayor Metin Adıgil, Bostaniçi District Mayor Nezahat Ergüneş and ten other members of the BDP within the scope of the investigation run by the Van specially-authorized Deputy Chief Prosecutor’s Office.

Some 90 students were also taken under custody yesterday within the scope of the KCK operations – in Istanbul, Ankara, the central province of Kırıkkale and the southeastern provinces of Diyarbakır and Mardin.

The students were members of the Student Commission of the Health and Social Service Workers’ Union (KESK) and the Turkish Medical Association’s (TTB) Medical Students Branch.
