Dozens die in Iraq car bombs

Bagdad bombing

KT News and Comment:

It is another day of mass murder in Iraq. At least 36 people were killed and more than 80 injured in a spate of car bombings in mainly Shia areas. 17 people died in two explosions at the entrance to the Kazimyah market in Baghdad. This was followed by two deadly blasts at the Shomala market and then there was another explosion at a taxi rank on the edge of Karbala.

“Bodies of young men and children covered with blood were everywhere and the dead pets, birds, shoes and broken cages were scattered here and there,” a Baghdad policeman told Reuters.

These atrocities demonstrate once again that the Maliki government is not really in charge. Every day we see that the security forces either cannot do their job properly – or do not want to. Last month was the bloodiest month yet under this administration.

Two weeks ago economic activity in the south of Iraq was effectively paralysed by the ‘million man march’ called by disaffected Sunni parties.

As tensions continue between the rival factions, the Shia-dominated government – like the Assad regime in Syria – hopes to survive by leaning on Iran for support.
