Another deadly day in Iraq

News and comment by The Kurdistan Tribune:

Today at least 68 people were killed and about 200 injured in terrorist attacks in Baghdad and southern Iraq.

In Baghdad, the mainly Shia areas of Kadhimiya and Sadr City were targeted with several explosions killing at least 24 people.

In the city of Nasiriya, about 120 miles south of Baghdad, a suicide bomber killed at least 44 pilgrims walking towards the holy city of Karbala.

Observers say these outrages reflect the severe political crisis gripping Iraq, which is highlighted by the dispute between the Shia prime minister, Nori Maliki, and the fugitive Sunni vice-president, Tariq Hashimi.

No one has declared responsibility for today’s attacks but fingers have been pointed at Al Queda and other terrorist groups such as Ansar.

In Sadr City labourer Ahmed Khalaf told an AFP reporter: “Political leaders fight each other for power, and we pay the price”.

Tonight Iraq looks like a country without a government.
