Opposition calls for debate on Kurdistan constitution

Kurdistan parliament

News and Comment by KT:

Opposition parties are asking for the draft Kurdistan constitution to be brought back before parliament for further elaboration, discussion and  amendment.

Fouad Husain, spokesman for the President of the Kurdistan Region, told AK News that this matter needs to be decided by parliament, not the president.

In June 2009 the draft constitution was passed with the support of 97 out of 111 members of the Kurdistan parliament. However, at that time, opposition parties were absent from the  parliament.

The Opposition feels it has been excluded from the debate on the Kurdistan constitution, as on other important matters, and that the two ruling parties were very quick to pass the current draft for their own purposes.
