Young worker killed in Sulaymani – another ‘health and safety casualty’

News and Comment by KT:

A 32 year old plasterer was killed today after falling from the fourth floor in the Goyja Project in the north of Sulaymani.

The young worker, whose name has not yet been released, came from Dyarbakir in Turkey/North Kurdistan and his body is being returned there. He was hired by a big company which provides zero insurance cover for the 600 or so workers it employs from Turkey. The KRG should make it compulsory for all such workers to be given cover during their period of employment.

This project has been contracted to the Najmadin company to build several residential tower blocks.

The accident highlights the lack of health and safety protection for workers on these kinds of projects. A local engineer told KT that there is no concept of providing initial training for these migrant workers and that technical staff are also working in dangerous conditions.
