According to media reports – which first appeared in the pro-government Sabah and Star newspapers – the jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan is proposing the withdrawal of PKK fighters from Turkish territory by 15 August This would mark a critical stage in the current peace negotiations.

Reuters reports that Ocalan has drafted a 20-page ‘road map’, which includes this proposal but reportedly has no proposal on Kurdish autonomy.

BDP MP Idris Baluken told Reuters that Ocalan had outlined his thoughts and has asked the BDP and the PKK leadership in the Qandil Valley and in Europe for their responses over the next fortnight.

“Ocalan wants to know whether the government is sincere or not,” Baluken added. “We want to talk positively but we have not made much progress politically.”

BDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtas yesterday sought to reassure both Turks and Kurds about latest developments. “Turks should not be worried that Turkey will be divided and Kurds should not be worried that they will not get their rights and freedoms,” he told reporters.
