Tragic Death of Young Kurdish Musician

By Arian Mufid:

The Sulaymani police announced yesterday that the young man who won the Rwanga Solo Musician Award just a few days earlier, on 8th December 2018, had committed suicide in his home in the district of Sarchya Sulaymani. Rehad Hama Aziz was 18 years old and in his fifth year at the music institution in Sulaymani. He hanged himself and his body was found by his mother. Rehat’s suicide has shocked the whole Kurdish community, inside and outside of Kurdistan, who revere and invest so much hope in their young generation. Rehat’s abundant talent and potential has drawn the attention of many people from all walks of life to this tragedy.

In his final comments to his followers on Facebook, Rehat wrote positively that: “I participated in the competition, I won the competition. Only I know the value of myself and nobody else, not Rwanga nor any other nice thing … The other candidates couldn’t make it not because they are not good because they are great artists. I only have my own style and talent and ability”. According to a local survey of hospitals in the Sulaymani region, there has been an increasing number of suicides, especially involving young men and women, with 42 such deaths in the month of October alone.

I urge the KRG and their health authority to study what is going on and apply more expertise, especially to help the new young generation in the universities and colleges. The KRG health authority should conduct a survey among young people to understand the root causes of the growing levels of depression.
