Peshmerga and other security forces members voted today in advance of the main polling for the Kurdistan parliament which will take place on Saturday. This is the fifth parliamentary election in the south of Kurdistan.

Reports of technical problems with the machinery deployed to detect fraud and duplicate voting could add to existing concerns about the overall fairness of the election process.

In the Suli area many people expect a landslide win on Saturday for the opposition Gorran party, an outcome which would place a question mark over the ability of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) – curently one of the two ruling parties – to remain in government.

However, while Gorran may beat the PUK, the ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) is tipped to retain the largest number of seats in parliament, due to its dominance in the Erbil and Dhok areas. Of course no one knows what will follow, in terms of any disputes about the outcome and of post-election negotiations between the parties.
