Leading Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) MP Pervin Buldan told a meeting this weekend that there is no chance of a successful conclusion to the peace process without the involvement  of PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) leader Abdullah Öcalan. “As the Kurdish people, we declare once again that we will never accept a peace process that doesn’t involve Kurdish people’s leader Mr. Öcalan”, said Buldan who has joined BDP delegations that have met Öcalan at his Imrali island prison this year.

Her comments follow the visit to Diyarbakır last weekend by Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) President Massoud Barzani and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. That event has caused speculation that Erdoğan wants to undermine the BDP by boosting Barzani’s standing in north Kurdistan. There is also talk of the formation of a new Kurdish party aligned to Barzani’s Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP). Layla Zana, the world famous Kurdish MP – who used to be in the BDP camp – has been tipped as one of its leaders. However, it is unclear whether the new party will challenge the BDP in the March local elections.
