Money not morals rules some Gorran MPs

According to the local weekly newspaper ‘Hawlati’, Kardo Mohamed, leader of the Gorran MPs in the Kurdistan parliament, rented out his house in Erbil and moved into an apartment that he was given by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). Since this MP resides in Erbil, arguably he has no need for additional accommodation but apparently he could not resist the offer from the KRG . This has caused a lot of raised eyebrows among ordinary people who are asking: “How could a Gorran MP be involved in such corruption?”

In similar circumstances, Sherzad Hafiz, another Gorran MP, is fighting to remove his name from a list – which appeared in the local newspaper ‘Xandan’ – of MPs who asked the Kurdistan parliament to facilitate buy outs of their apartments at their original prices. Hafiz has denied signing any statement asking the parliament to buy his apartment in Erbil.

These reports suggest that the Gorran movement is in danger of becoming trapped in the same mistakes made by the two ruling parties in the past and people are expected to stay loyal to the movement, regardless of whether some of the leaders are stealing money.

As Nabaz Gorran, the prominent Kurdish writer, said: “We thought the opposition MPs were creating a world much different from the past, but this wasn’t the case”.

How can it be possible for Gorran MPs to demand action to tackle corruption and speed up the reform of Kurdistan’s politics, if they themselves are corrupt?

Such MPs have failed to meet the hopes of the people who voted for them .

Any Gorran MPs and all the others involved in this type of corruption should straightaway submit their resignations to the Kurdistan parliament because they have betrayed the trust of voters.

Gorran leader Nawshirwan Mustafa should sack any Gorran MP who is guilty of corruption.

I think, before we make any judgements, this issue has to be further investigated with clear evidence brought up forth. If true, it would be a disappointment, but will not take away anything from the legitimacy of the overall opposition as it doesn’t belong to any one person or group. Rather, it is the people and for the people.

Leaders are supposeed to be the role model for all and source of ethics and morality.Leaders are supposed to serve the nation not serve only their own pocket and seek for fame and name. Money and fame together have blinded and corrupted the consciousness of men. I dont expect leaders to be angels of God but i do expect them to be honest, and respect the law and the will of people and not take advantage of their work position.

If this turns out true, then its very sad and disappointing and this specific representative will lose the respect and trust of the people. He will then be like all these other current corrupt leaders from KDP and PUK, including Barzani and Talabani, who are sucking up Kurdistan’s resources and building mansions from what belongs to the poor Kurds. This current leadership and its corrupt system has created a dirty culture in our society whereby stealing and unlawful possession of fortune is justified on a daily basis. They need to go.

Kak Azad :It is such a big shame especially for leaders to abuse thier power and athourity.I feel very disturbed when I hear these kind of awful news come out of kurdistan.
I have been trying to portray a good image of kurdish and kurdistan at my school , Taking to students and teachers ,explaining how kurdish poeple were neglected ,used and abused by many different countries.I did a presentation in my law class about the unlawful arrest of Shiivan perwer in canada.I tell them Kurdish have gone through more then one hulucust at the hands of Turks, Arabs , Azari-Persians.
In any case ,all kurds have fallen victums and paied a price in ne way or the other for kurdistan, and iam one of those kurds who in fact ,is still paying a price for being a kurd and defending kurdish poeple everywhere.yet untill this day I have never asked anything from any kurdish official. If only I could open my heart and say my own life story and what i have gone through at the hands of Iraqi ,Turkish Iranian and pakistani policemen….

    Kak akuvan,
You are absolutely right. For so many years we, Kurds, have been advocating to people that we are clean, hardworking, fair, and just people. Then come our leaders to portray an image of barbaric backward people who wouldn’t shy away from using the same tools Saddam used to silence their critics. How can you answer someone who asks you: why does your Kurdistan still lack electricity half the day when you swim in oil? How come you don’t have simple hospitals for the public but your officials are able to build a top notch hospital for themselves and their families in Salahadeen resort? Sad sad sad.
