Ismail Beshkchi, the Turkish writer who has spent many years in Turkish jails, was honoured at a cultural evening in Erbil last night. “I am pleased to see the flag of Kurdistan and Peshmarga foces in free Kurdistan”, he told reporters.

The renowned writer and sociology professor was given a medal by president Barzani in recognition of his long-term friendship with the Kurdish nation and its cause.

He told the gathering that, while the twentieth century was a hundred years of darkness and tragedy for the Kurdish people, the twenty-first century offers them a shining horizon.

Ismail Beshkchi endured torture during his many years of incarceration by the Turkish state for his opposition to tryanny and his support for other writers.

Professor Dr. Ismail Besikci is an honorable man, a true researcher, and a real friend of the Kurds. In every big city or small town all over the Greater Kurdistan, a street, a monument, a school, or something must be named after him. He deserves all of the appreciations he can get from every Kurd. He is the only scholar who has suffered the longest for writing critically about the Kurdish nation. Turkey’s Gray Wolf judges punished him to serve a century in jail. We the Kurds need to keep Dr. Besikci in our hearts, homes, and in our minds. He is one of my heroes and mentors.

My greetings to prof. I. B. from a widow of a Turkish kurd, who was a great fan. I am very sorry that I never learned enough Turkish nor Kurdish to read any of his books.
