Kurdistan Parliament in crisis

Abdulla Mulla Ali, the latest MP to resign

The Kurdistan Parliament is losing touch and credibility. It has existed since 1992, apart from the civil war years of 1994-8 when it was dissolved. Recently six MPs have resigned from their posts – which means local people are fast losing their representatives (even though they will eventually be replaced).

In the middle of August 2011, four Gorran MPs submitted their resignations, protesting that the two political parties controlling the parliament were blocking any good projects.

Last Monday, the well-known writer and poet Dr Raffia Sabir, who was elected on the PUK candidate list, resigned from parliament for similar reasons. Dr Rafiq, who was head of the committee of audit and transparency, told reporters that no member of parliament can implement any of their goals or make an effective contribution.

Yet another resignation took place today – of the MP Abdulla Mullah Ali, also from the PUK candidate list. He told reporters that he cannot wait any longer for the head of parliament to return to Kurdistan and accept him.

These six resignations over the last sixteen weeks (and seven since the last elections) lead us to the following conclusions:

1. The MPs who have resigned are a loss to parliament because of their intellect and experience.

2. Decent MPs are very unhappy because their good work and new ideas won’t be taken into account unless approved by the majority.

3. Kurdistan’s MPs are no longer working together and this has resulted in a dysfunctional parliament.

4. Finally, the KRG should take this matter very seriously, listen to MPs and find out why some are resigning. Otherwise the Kurdistan Parliament will be a place for unproductive groups whose only objective is to secure their salaries and bonuses.
