For the past few weeks the security situation in Iraq has deteriorated dramatically and especially this week when more than 250 people have been killed.
On Monday there was a car bomb explosion at the gates of the ‘Green Zone’ in Baghdad. The terrorists had targeted Ausama Nujafi, the leader of the house of parliament, but they could not reach their target and the bomb exploded near the gate, injuring a KDP MP, Mr Audep.
On Tuesday at least 15 security personnel died in an attack on a jail near Baghdad Baiji.
Kirkuk City saw another explosion which killed several people on Tuesday.
Today in Kalis, near Baghdad, a car exploded in the market centre, leaving 35 people dead or injured.
These security issues coincide with the visit by US Vice-President Joe Biden to discuss the impending US troop withdrawal. Iraq and the USA have agreed that America will withdraw its forces by the end of this year. But a key question is: how can such a frail country – in respect of its security and politics – be left to its own fate? Our security correspondent in Baghdad has confirmed to us that Joe Biden’s visit is taking place sooner than scheduled – a sign that the US administration is worried about what will happen on the eve of the withdrawal.
