International Day of Action (Nov 1): Save Kobani! Don’t forget Sinjar and the Nineveh plains!

Society for Threatened Peoples Press Release:

The Society for Threatened Peoples (STP) supports calls of the exiled Kurds and their friends in Europe, America, Asia, Africa and Australia for an international Day of Action on November 1, as a sign of solidarity for the citizens of the northern Syrian Kurdish city of Kobani. On this day, there are to be several large and small vigils and demonstrations in many major cities such as Berlin, Paris, London, Rome, Stockholm, Washington, Toronto, Mexico City, Moscow, Erbil, Istanbul, Johannesburg, Cairo, and many others.

The STP is organizing a vigil for the university city of Göttingen in Lower Saxony, where the organization is based: Saturday, November 1, 2014, from 11 am to 1 pm– in front of the “altes Rathaus” (old Town Hall) at the “Gänseliesl”, Markt 9, 37073 Göttingen

These actions are meant to be a sign of solidarity and support for the people of Kobani. Since the end of 2013, the terrorist organization “Islamic State” (IS) has been trying to capture the northern Syrian city, but failed again and again – thanks to the resistance of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG). In mid-September of 2014, the Islamist militias prepared for a major offensive; on September 28, 2014, the attack on the city began.

In Germany, exiled Kurds and their friends are calling on the federal government of Germany to exert more pressure on the Turkish government in Ankara to change the policy towards the terrorist militia IS immediately. The Turkish government is not only watching as the civilian population of Kobani is being exterminated. There are also several indications that Ankara provided logistical support for the Islamists for at least two years – whereas wounded fighters who tried to defend the northern Syrian Kurdish towns are most often not even allowed to be treated in Turkey. Thus, several severely wounded Kurds who were brought to the border had been rejected and had subsequently bled to death. All in all, 200,000 Kurdswere expelled from Kobani.

The STP suspects that the Turkish government is planning to break up the three northern Syrian Kurdish cantons Kobani, Afrin and Jazeera– and the STP demands that neither Germany nor Europe will accept this policy any longer. There must be more humanitarian aid for the refugees from Kobani. Further, there must be a supply corridor for the beleaguered Kurds in Kobani. The Turkish government recently allowed 152 Kurdish fighters from Iraqi Kurdistan to pass through, but it still refuses to set up a permanent corridor for the other two Syrian-Kurdish enclaves.

    Dear Dr. Kamal Sido,
Is my judgement on what you write too harsh if I would conclude that Turkey since 1923 has been for the Kurds a terrorist state and, at the latest, since 2013 a jihadist country whose government let without any hinder cross its border into Rojava by sunnite IS-terrorists from all over the world? By the way, as a former tourist in Turkey I like the Topkapi palace in Istanbul much better than the palace of Turkey’s present would- be Sultan in Ankara, it just misses the sweetness of the architecture in the Ottoman Empire, don’t you think?

We demand independence. Nothing more and nothing less. We hope the world has heard our voice by now.
