News from The Kurdistan Tribune:
The body of petroleum engineer Tariq Karem was this morning extracted from an oil reservoir in the Sulaymani region 26 hours after he fell into it. A local police spokesman said the body has been sent for a post-mortem. Tariq Karem was carrying out his duties during the Newroz bank holiday when he fell into the large reservoir and drowned.
In a statement, a local labour union called for the natural resources ministry to be held responsible for his death. They went on to say: “Unfortunately, due to a lack of health and safety and negligence, places of work in Kurdistan have become killing machines. If we look at the statistics, not a single day passes without the lives of workers being lost as a result of a lack of health and safety measures. These are not accidents but pure negligence by the government and greed by the rich classes that do not value the lives of labourers”.
