15 year old Berkin Elvan died on Tuesday

With Turkey gripped by massive protests following the death yesterday of 15 year old Berkin Elvan, the pro-Kurd Peace and Democracy (BDP) has backed the protests and declared two days mourning, suspending its election campaign in the Istanbul area, reports ANF. Berkin Elvan had been in a coma for 269 days after he was struck on the head by a police tear gas canister while on his way to buy bread for his family during the Gezi protests last June. He is the eighth person to have died in the Gezi protests.

A BDP statement declared: “Berkin Elvan is the latest victim of the authoritarian, repressive state violence that has murdered 13 year-old Uğur Kaymaz, the 34 young Kurds bombed at Roboski and the Mehmets, Abdullahs, Ethems and Medenis who were killed during the Gezi Park resistance.” The BDP demanded that those responsible for Berkin’s death be immediately brought to justice.
