Fire at Suli University student accommodation
Three students died today and 57 were injured as fire swept through Suli University’s main student accommodation building.
Initially a spokesman for the ministry of education told the media that the accommodation had passed health and safety checks and that he thought the fire must have been started deliberately. However, Halwlati reports that the cause of the fire has since been identified as an electrical fault. The university has set up an inquiry committee.
The accommodation was originally built by the private sector and paid for by the government. The building, located in Sarchinar district, is used by students at the technical college, which is part of the university.
The college has declared three days of mourning.
