On the eve of the fourth anniversary of Soran’s murder, the Soran Mama Hama Committee has decided to award its memorial prize to three journalists: Nabaz Goran, who writes for several newspapers, Niaz Abdulla of the Metro organisation and Shwan Mohammed, former editor of Awena newspaper. These three have worked tirelessly for the last several years to promote independent journalism in Kurdistan.

Soran Mama Hama was murdered four years ago on 22 July 2008. He was born in Kirkuk in 1987 and studied at the city’s college of music before becoming an investigative journalist for Lvinpress.

He was murdered because he unveiled the involvement of Kirkuk police and security officers in a prostitution network.

Soran’s killers are still at large in Kurdistan and his file remains open.
