Parwaz Hussain – ambassador for the Kurds

Parwaz Hussain

Parwaz Hussain

By Mufid Abdullah:

It is some achievement when Parwaz Hussain, from the south of Kurdistan, can attract 3.5 million people from the Arab world to listen to her wonderful singing – even though she sings in Kurdish. With the support of just her husband, this young woman has reached the semi-final of the Arab Idol competition on MBS Arabic TV.

This talented and beautiful woman has made the whole Arab world love her, her singing and her language, even to the extent that the four famous Arab singers presenting this TV programme all spoke in Kurdish to show their regard for her.

Many Arabs oppose an independent state for the Kurds but I trust this outlook has been weakened over the past four weeks that Parwaz Hussain has been in the competition.

Her success shows how, by applying talent with a positive attitude, Kurds can affect the way people see us around the world. Parwaz has set an excellent example for the young generation of the south of Kurdistan.

That is an achievement, when they let them sing in Kurdish or Berber. Amazigh is now an official language in Morocco. Hopefully, with the peace talks going on between the Turkish Government and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, Kurdish can be legally used in media and education.
