According to a Turkish opposition MP, the 34 young victims of an air strike in December 2011 were deliberately targeted – even though the authorities knew that they were unarmed smugglers – because it was wrongly believed that a senior PKK official was traveling with them.

Bianet reports that Levent Gök, a Republican People’s Party (CHP) MP, has informed the Parliamentary Human Rights Investigating Committee of his party’s disagreement with the official report into the massacre.

According to Gök: “Fehman Hüseyin/Bahoz Erdal [a Syrian leading PKK member] was thought to be among [the group of smugglers], the lives of the people who were known to be smugglers were risked and the bombing order was given.”

The CHP has prepared its own report stating that “the death of 34 of our civilian citizens after being bombed by F-16 fighter planes is a most grave violation of the right to life.”  It also asks: Who gave the order to bomb a group of unarmed teenagers?
