Masud Barzani visits Nawshirwan Mustafa in Sulaymani

By The Kurdistan Tribune:

Last night the President of Kurdistan, Masud Barzani, visited Nawshirwan Mustafa, the leader of Gorran, at his headquarters in Sulaymani. It was an unprecedented event – the first face-to-face meeting between the two leaders. It marks the start of a new chapter in the relationship between the KDP and the Gorran party and also between the opposition and the two ruling parties.

Gorran is the most powerful player in the opposition movement which was established several months ago. Currently the KDP and the President of Kurdistan are facing big challenges: military bombardment by Iran and Turkey from one side and political bombardment by the Iraqi central government from another. Masud Barzani is looking for a reliable partner and he knows that Gorran is the dominant political force in the Sulaymani area. In reality, it is now also the second largest party in Kurdistan.

Masud Barzani’s visit is symbolic. It confirms Gorran’s commitment to playing a more constructive role in the KRG  – and perhaps it will be given bigger role by the President of Kurdistan. Many Gorran supporters will be closely watching developments and hoping that their leadership does not compromise on the party’s commitments to fundamental democratic reforms and an end to corruption.
