The Freedom Umbrella is organizing a mass demonstration in London on the anniversary of the uprising in the south of Kurdistan.
Date: Friday 17 February
Time: 2-4 afternoon
Place: 23 Buckingham Gate, London, SW1E 6LB (Nearest tube stations: St James’s Park, Victoria)
The Freedom Umbrella is urging the Kurdish diaspora to join this demonstration. In a statement issued on 10 February, it declared:
“These days will be one year since the last uprising in the cities and towns of the south of Kurdistan. The memory of the 62 days uprising is shining in the sky of Kurdistan. Although the military junta of the two ruling parties destroyed this uprising, the peoples’ demands – for change in the political system, freedom, an end to corruption and a better living standard – are still alive. There are still demonstrations by students and workers and by residents of most districts of Sulaymani for better services. These are signs that the uprising still continues.”
“…The two ruling parties, PUK and KDP, and their parliamentary representatives and the president of Kurdistan promised the participants in the uprising to implement their demands but this hasn’t happened. Once more the two ruling parties are now trying to pretend that the new Kurdistan cabinet will implement radical reforms and meet the demands of the people. But the mass of the people have concluded that change is impossible under the rule of the two parties”.
