Rizgar died on 15th April, aged 58. He was married with two children.

He was a consultant psychiatrist and president of the council of the Kurdish Medical Association, KUMA-UK, which has re-named its research fund in his memory.

Rizgar worked with women’s groups, defending their rights and campaigning to stop violence against women. He also worked in a non-partisan way to defend democracy and promote a constitutional system in Kurdistan.

Hundreds of friends and colleagues have left messages on his Facebook memorial page.

KUMA-UK has organised today’s memorial. It says:

“Rizgar was a champion for the Kurdish cause and a tireless activist who spent most of his adult life promoting social justice, women’s rights, health services and academia in Kurdistan.

“Rizgar was always passionate about supporting young doctors and researchers. To continue this work and to honour his legacy, KUMA-UK has decided to change the name of KUMA Research Fund to the Dr Rizgar Amin Research Fund.

“This fund is designed to financially support junior Kurdish health researchers in and outside Kurdistan who works on health research projects that could ultimately be beneficial to the health services in Kurdistan.

“In memory of Dr Rizgar we are actively seeking contribution/donations from individuals and organisations towards this fund. Please contact KUMA-UK treasurer Dr Harman Saman (email: Harman.t.saman@gmail.com) for your contributions”.

Such a beautiful article and a very sad loss to both the Kurdish and British community. I have recently lost my father, Dr Noori Abdulla. He was a GP, a dermatologist, a great guy, caring doctor, loving father, wonderful husband, dedicated lecturer and the best possible man you could ever meet. I am glad that the community remembered this great man and I hope the Kurdish/university remember my father as they did with dr rizgarm
