International Women’s Day: ‘Involve women from different walks of life’

KT Comment:

Women in Kurdistan

Women from beyond the elite must be involved to make real change

On International Women’s Day, GK TV presenter Susan Anwar has struck a thoughtful and justifiably critical note about the usual celebrations in the south of Kurdistan. In an article appearing today on Xandan website, she writes:

“Every year on 8th March all women’s organisations and women’s rights groups are organising celebrations and seminars for this day and inviting a lot of people and promising a lot without implementing it.

“The point I would like to make is: Whatever these organisations are saying is not going to be implemented and they are inviting people from the elite classes, not ordinary women from the ordinary classes. For that reason they are facing a lot of criticism and for that reason the women of the elite classes and women politicians should make an effort to invite other women from different walks of life”.
