Gorran party assumes beacon position

By Mufid Abdulla:

In an unprecedented step, the leader of the Gorran party, Nawshirwan Mustafa, has called on four Gorran MPs involved in corruption – who have resigned their positions and left the Gorran parliamentary group – to apologise to their supporters. Earlier this month it was revealed to the media that these MPs had requested the right to buy apartments, which had been provided to them by the KRG, at discounted rates. The MPs are: Karwan Salih, Ismail Galali, Paymen Abdulkarim and Abdulkarim Zakoyee.

In his message, broadcast by Gorran Radio, the party leader told the four MPs: “I can’t hide it from you that you have failed in the first test of parliamentary life. You couldn’t resist the parliamentary privileges of villas, apartments, cars and bodyguards. I don’t want you to fear me, but your conscience should be clear in front of the mass of Gorran supporters who helped you to go to parliament. You have paid a heavy price for your mistake and you have lost the trust of your people. I can’t defend you, even if you are very close to me”.

This is the first time in Kurdistan that a major political leader has effectively sacked followers because of their corruption.

This example can be taken to show that the Gorran leader is moving in the right direction. It will be a clear message to other MPs that he will not compromise on corruption. Nawshirwan Mustafa, from the very early days of his struggle, has been known for his zero tolerance towards corruption.

We can conclude three key things from the Gorran leader’s message:

  1. By this act Gorran has proven to the people that the people are king and the MP is the servant of the people.
  2. This is a blueprint for how the Gorran party can save the Kurdistan parliament. People don’t want corrupt MPs in parliament – through their elected representatives they want seats at the table of power.
  3. This event should create a much-needed debate in the south of Kurdistan. Gorran should be a vehicle for a profound shift from the past.
