Barzani back to the KRG

KT News and Comment:

KRG parliament

Kurdistan Region’s parliament

Masud Barzani today returned to Erbil from his international travels to face fall-out from Sunday’s decision by the ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) MPs to extend his presidency by two years.

A leading KDP member (who insisted on anonymity) told Awene that Barzani was not involved in Sunday’s decision. This claim will be treated with deep scepticism by many observers.

A curious game is underway in which the PUK is separately issuing statements about the presidential extension while the KDP media is saying very little, other than to report on the latest media clashes between the PUK and the opposition Gorran party. There has been no joint statement by the ruling parties.

Tomorrow the KDP and PUK politburos are due to meet together to discuss the issue.
