Refugees from Mosul cross into Kurdistan

UNICEF will work with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to carry out a mass vaccination campaign to prevent the spread of polio and other diseases among children displaced to Kurdistan by the Iraq conflict. About 300,000 refugees crossed into south Kurdistan territories last week to escape the fighting around Mosul after ISIS jihadists captured the city from the Iraqi army.

UNICEF says that the KRG Minister of Health, Dr. Rekawt H.Rashid Karim, met with its Iraq representative on Tuesday and agreed to expand immunizations to include local populations, displacement camps and border crossings.

It says polio – a disabling and potentially fatal infectious disease – has recently reappeared in Iraq, fourteen years after it was previously eradicated through mass immunization campaigns.

The organisation is already working with the KRG to carry out immunisations in camps for refugees from Syria and west Kurdistan. The expanded campaign will target more than 700,000 children under the age of five.

HIV/AIDS is increasingly on the rise in South. In 2014, S.K Health Department/Ministry received medical supplies from donor foreign countries/agencies supposedly for Kurdish citizens. 50% of the medical supplies were sold back in the black market. PM Nechirvan Barzanis newphwes are importing medicine from Turkey, US, Iran and selling it back to the medical centers for 400% profit.
