Stop Facebook’s discrimination against Kurdistan: Fly the flag!

Most Kurds will be astonished and outraged by Facebook’s discriminatory policy towards Kurdistan, including its secret ban on Kurdish maps. Documents leaked to the media by Amine Derkaoui, a disgruntled former Facebook moderator, reveal that Facebook gives a secret guidebook to moderators which is very different to the community guidelines that it makes publicly available.

This secret guidebook gives a clear instruction to the employees to remove:

  1. All attacks on Ataturk
  2. Maps of Kurdistan
  3. Burning of Turkish flags
  4. PKK support and depiction
  5. Abdulla ‘Apo’ Ocalan-related contents

While outlawing displays of support for Kurdistan, Facebook’s secret guidebook allows the depiction of deep wounds, excessive blood, crushed heads and limbs and even marijuana.

In an interview with U.S. gossip website Gawker.com, Mr Derkaoui said: “It’s humiliating. They are just exploiting the Third World”.

Aram Abass, a Kurdish Facebook user told me: “Even on Facebook they do not allow us to practice freedom, and when we defend ourselves, they label us as terrorists. Shame on Facebook, shame on the United States, justice will prevail, long live Apo’”.

Another Facebook user expressed his concerns: “Facebook is a very important social outlet, it can’t be ignored, this is a clear discrimination, and potentially legally challengeable”. Anwar Mohammed went on to say: “Facebook is clearly discriminating against the Kurds, we will organise campaigns to condemn this act. It must be stressed that Turkey (Ataturk) is accused of committing genocide against the Armenians, at least by Armenia and France, while Ocalan is a freedom fighter”.

The prominent Kurdish writer and intellectual Dr Kamal Mirawdeli told me in a phone conversation: “We will launch a campaign on Facebook itself asking all Kurds and friends of the Kurds to use Kurdistan flag, map and even Apo’s pictures on their profile photo, to send them a clear message that we will not tolerate this bizarre policy”.

Thanks for bringing it to public attention. I suggest all Kurdish media outlets post the map of Kurdistan and a message reading” Face book must stop discrimination against Kurds” for a week.

It is outrageous that facebook discriminates und combats against the kurdish people, instead of supporting their struggle for freedom and demokracy. It seems, facebook is run by evil people.
