Burning of KIU office in Zakho, December 2011

Five members of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) were yesterday sentenced to two years in jail each for participating in the burning of the Kurdistan Islamic Union’s (KIU) offices in Zakho last year. The same Dohuk court hearing found another 27 KDP members not guilty and released them.

These sentences are the first time that criminals inside the ruling KDP have been brought to court and jailed. This has happened under the pressure of the whole opposition.

However, lawyers acting for the KIU told Lvinpress that they thought the two year sentences were too light.

KIU offices have been attacked and set on fire twice in recent years: in 2005 during the general election and in 2011 in Zhako during Friday prayers.

So what? They are charged and imprisoned. Next day, you will see them released and wandering on the streets.
