It’s time for the KRG to stand up for Syria’s Kurds

By Harem Karem:

After decades of repression, months of anti-government demonstrations, hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries, the Western Kurds have gained finally momentum in fighting the despotic Syrian government, while the confused Assad continues to chase his own tail.

In a pathetic speech on Monday, Assad sounded as out of touch as ever, repeating the same promises he made – and failed to fulfil – in 2005: pledging an end to the right of the Ba’ath nomenclature to preserve its constitutional prerogative to govern Syria, as defined in article eight of the constitution, regardless of how small its support might be.

Despite a campaign launched last week by local organisations and dignitaries, urging the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to show decisive and unequivocal support for the Western Kurds, most KRG politicians have failed to grasp the necessity of their support and how it can provide enormous encouragement and confidence to their fellow Kurds at this crucial time. Their silence is deafening and despicable.

The Syrian regime is isolated, weak and under international pressure as the United States seeks to cut its financial lifelines and gathers evidence on Assad’s violence in order to pursue a case against him in the international court for crimes against humanity.

There has never been a better time for President Jalal Talabani and President Massoud Barzani to save their last few ounces of dignity by tearing up their appalling marriage certificate with the Syrian regime which has granted them access to Damascus since the 1970s.

It’s time for Messrs. Presidents to stand up for what they once stood for, regardless of how disappointed their old friend Ahmadinejad will be.

It’s time to make a stand: declare your full solidarity with your fellow Kurds who are suffering at the the hands of repressive Syrian regime. And pay them a visit in the Syria-Turkey border camps.

KRG must stand up for those people immediately.
