On Friday 12 April, a 25 year old imprisoned migrant worker of Bangladeshi origin died after spending nearly three months in a Kurdish immigration centre in Sulaymani.

According to local police spokesman, Inspector Sarkawt Ahmed, the man had entered the Kurdistan region to work without obtaining a visa and work permit and he was arrested by Judge’s order according to article 24 of immigration law.

The cause of his death is thought to be due to serious underlying health conditions. After falling ill on Friday, he was immediately transferred to hospital and died shortly after.

Inspector Sarkawt Ahmed told local media that his body has been sent for postmortem examination to discover cause of death and the extent of the disease. His body will be returned to Bangladesh after the legal procedure is complete.
