Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) prime minister Nechirvan Barzani told the BBC today that it will be difficult to resolve the Iraq conflict while Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is in power. He also expressed support for an autonomous region for Sunnis but said he thinks Iraq can avoid falling apart.

“Now we have to sit down and find a solution, find how to live together… but if we expect, if we think that Iraq will go back like before Mosul, I don’t think so, it’s almost impossible,” Barzani told BBC correspondent Jim Muir. On the prospect of Iraq dissolving, he said:  “I don’t think so, it will, can stay together again.”

Asked whether a solution was possible with Maliki in power, Barzani replied: “There is no trust right now we have to be honest… in my view it’s difficult.”

On possible autonomy for Sunni areas, he added: “We have to leave it to Sunni areas to decide it but I think this is the best model for them as well to do it. The best way is to have a Sunni region like what we have in Kurdistan.”

We will declare our independence in 2017 or earlier depending on the circumstances. Convey the true message of your people without any hesitation or fear. Politics is politics but the world should also know what Kurds demand. You, president, FM will all have to step down after 2 terms and respect democracy. There must be accountability and transparency in oil revenues. We urge you to battle corruption, starting with you yourself first. We will make peace with the world, including Isreal once an independent South Kurdistan is declared.

The UN state members need to convene an urgent meeting to discuss the future of Iraq and save its citizens from further genocides.
