The Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for yesterday’s deadly attack on the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) headquarters in Jalawla in the disputed province of Diyala. 18 were killed and dozens wounded in a double assault.

According to the chairman of Jalawla city council, Khorsheed Ahmad: “A suicide bomber parked a car packed with explosives near the PUK headquarters and after it went off, he managed to sneak into the building and detonate his vest”.  ISIS  gave a slightly different version on its website, claiming there were two suicide bomber attacks and that one of the perpetrators was a Kurd, called Saeed Kurdi.  “This is an act of revenge after a group of Kurdish Muslim girls were arrested in Khanaqin and we have succeeded,” claimed ISIS.

Most of the victims were PUK security forces members guarding the offices.

ISIS previously targeted the PUK at the end of April, killing 30 at an election rally in Khanaqin. Over the weekend it also staged attacks on Iraqi security forces in Mosul and temporarily took control of a university in Anbar.

The al Qaeda-affiliated terrorist organisation has been very active in Syria and west Kurdistan, although there the YPG (Peoples’ Protection Units) have had considerable success in repelling them and defending the Kurd-majority areas.
