South Kurdistan journalist and a women’s activist to address rights meeting at Swedish parliament

Independent journalist Kamal Chomani and Kurdish women’s activist Halal Rafe are to address a meeting at the Swedish parliament next week to discuss freedom of expression and women’s rights in the Kurdistan Region. Officials from the Swedish foreign ministry and the foreign relations departments of five political parties are expected to attend the session.

It is expected to start by showing a video about recent violations of human rights and assassinations of journalists. Kamal Chomani will speak in English about the major challenges facing independent journalism in the region and Halal Rafe of the Nina centre will speak about honour killings. Both speakers will answer questions from the officials.

The seminar is taking place on Tuesday 27th May 2014 at 1300 hours at Mittpoolen, Rksgatan 2 at the Swedish parliament. It has been organised by the Pen Club and Reporters Without Borders.
