Hatice Yaşar, a Kurdish politician who was forced to leave Turkey following the 1980 military coup, was arrested yesterday on her arrival at Ankara’s Esenboğa Airport and taken to Sincan Prison. Yaşar had moved to Sulaymani where she taught at the university and was also an advisor to PKK leader and Iraq president Jalal Talabani.

“She returned to Turkey after 33 years, at a time that many factions of the society are discussing … They should have apologized to her, instead they didn’t allow her to spend time with her family,” Ayşe Bakkalcı and Metin Bakkalcı, Yaşar’s relatives, told bianet

“Yaşar didn’t return to Turkey because her conscience didn’t let her when scores were dying on the mountains. She chose this time because a farewell to arms is very possible now. She doesn’t have any other motives.”

Prior to the 1980 coup, Hatice Yaşar was a leader of Ala Rizgari and an advocate of non-military Kurdish resistance to state oppression.

However, on 5 October 2012 a prosecutor issued an arrest warrant for Hatice Yaşar, charging her with “being a member of armed terror organization”. Along with Yaşar, around 40 PKK leaders including Murat Karayılan, Cemil Bayık, Duran Kalkan, Ali Haydar Kaytan, Zübeyr Aydar, Remzi Kartal and Osman Öcalan were put on the arrest list, reports bianet.
