Ahmet Türk, an independent deputy who co-chairs the umbrella Democratic Society Congress (DTK), has urged prime minister Erdogan’s government to act sensibly in its dealing with Kurds, who make up twenty per cent of Turkey’s population.

He told reporters that, especially while the MIT (Turkish intelligence) is negotiating with jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan, the state should stop its continuing repression in Kurdish towns and villages and its bombardment of the bases of PKK fighters.

This bombardment, which was stepped up last week, could be interpreted as an attempt to provoke the PKK at the very same time as Erdogan talks of wanting a peaceful settlement.
