‘Maliki wants to take Kurdistan back to pre-1991’ – Barham Salih

KT News:

Former KRG PM Barham Salih

Iraq prime minister Nuri Maliki wants to take Kurdistan back to the situation pre-1991, Barham Salih said today, referring to the dark period when Kurds in Iraq lacked autonomy and were at the mercy of Saddam Hussein.

The former Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) prime minister and current deputy secretary of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) made this claim in an interview with the Al Arabiya newspaper.

“In 2003 we tried to build a new Iraq”, he said, “but the Dijla operation takes us back to before 1991”.

Salih seems to be a wise person. Talabani is getting too old and sick. He has not delivered anything since he got back from Germany. Rumors say also he is having problems with dementia. Maliki needs a strong President to confront his “Saddam” policies. Time for Salih to assume Talibani’s role.

Mr. Salhi, his leadership and that of Talabany and Barzani – these despicable leaders they had every chance to declare independent Kurdistan immediately after American invasion of Iraq. Instead, they acted like thieves plundering Kurds in pursue of their own self-interest , ravenous greed and lust for power. They assassinated the Kurdish ideals for independent to cater to Arab leaders. They were naïve thinking America will perpetuate its protection of Kurds. Now, difficult reality to be challenged; they will not be able to do so because of their abusive policies they have no public support.

Rauf: you think independence is something you declare without taking on consideration the neighbouring countries? People like you would bring Kurdistan back to stoneage!

Rauf I see where you’re coming from, but the overall argument idealises the situation. The US would have never allowed for an independent Kurdistan, and the leaders were not about to go against the country who had just helped in liberating them from Saddam. Then there’s the issue with Turkey…

This is the problem with Kurds just like their despicable leader Talabani who assured Turkish media that Independent Kurdistan is illusion and Kurdish poets’ dream. It’s unfortunate previous two replies to my comments revealing Turkish threat against independent Kurdistan. In response I implore you genuinely that Turks will always remain as a reviled obstacle toward any freedom for Kurds. Does that mean to make Turks happy we should forfeit our natural and national rights or should we find ways to overcome them?
Should Arabs were willing to coexist with Kurds, meaning consenting on autonomous Kurdistan region within federated Iraq that perhaps would be a compromise for Kurds to deal with in a short run until situation would mature to declare their independent state. For that to happen, Arabs has to be willing to share power with Kurds. But power sharing has not unprecedented in Arab history, and that means Arabs will not accept anything other than Kurds to be their subordinate as has been for over a millennium.
That is my point whether Kurds are to declare their independent state or be subjugated to Arab domination and there is not another option. Well, choose between the two.
Additionally I commented about our corrupted leaders Talabany and Barzani – I assure you that there will never be Justice in Kurdistan neither a free Kurdistan under their leadership.
