Ambassador Beecroft and President Barzani

The US Ambassador to Iraq has warned Kurdistan Regional President Masud Barzani to tone down his campaign over the Kurdish areas that are not controlled by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

In a meeting yesterday at President Barzani’s Salahaddin headquarters, US Ambassador Robert Beecroft told Barzani that the dispute over the territories must be resolved with Baghdad and that the US will not accept any unilateral act by the KRG.

This is an indication that the US wants to bolster the authority of Iraq premier Maliki and rein in the Kurds. However, as Barzani pointed out to Beecroft, under Iraq’s constitution, Article 140, the issue should be dealt with through a referendum.

    President Barzani:

Its up to no nation and government to determine our nation’s destiny.

Go ahead with your plans with declaration of independence for South Kurdistan.

The entire Kurdish nation will support you!

    Mr. Brindar

We agree with you that we must make every effort to unite our voices and views first. But how can that materialize when very Kurdish leader only takes into account his own political party’s interests, when our economy is not a national one, when our Peshmarga Forces only receive commands and act at the behest of their local leaders, when there is no transparency, when corruption is perishing every one, when we cannot lessen our dependency on neighboring hostile countries, when we have not been able to build the required infrastructure, when we cannot tolerate siting around a table to exchange differing opinions, when one ends up behind the bars for criticizing government authorities, when women cannot participate in every aspect of life, when we have not had any strategy to annex Kirkuk and Kurdish regions back into KRG, when we have not done enough to win the hearts and minds of for other ethnic and religious minorities to favor joining an independent Kurdistan in case of a referendum, etc.
Our leaders maintain that first we must concentrate on building the infrastructure. Good pretext! Ok! Let’s start it today! Leave a century of incessant failures! That should not take no more than 6-12 months from now. Next what?
All the above is feasible in 1 year window time only if they truly wish and only if they care and unite? But will they unite? Will they agree to set aside their personal vendettas against one another, their decade-old political discrepancies and economic interests for the sake of the nation?
Or maybe we need a reshuffling of system. One that the youths directly themselves step into the scene and take charge!
