Syrian regime kills mourners at murdered Kurd leader’s funeral

At least six Kurds were killed today by Syrian security forces when they opened fire on mourners attending the funeral of Mashaal Tammo who was murdered by state assassins on Friday. 50,000 people attended the funeral in Qamishli, in possibly the biggest protest in Western Kurdistan since the start of this year’s Syrian uprising.

“All of Qamishli is out today, the funeral is turning into a massive protest,” Kurdish activist and lawyer Mustafa Osso told the Associated Press.

Across Europe – including Britain, France, Germany, Switzerland and Holland – Kurds waving Kurdish flags protested against these murders outside Syrian embassies. In Vienna, Austria, protesters  occupied the Syrian embassy and smashed portraits of the Syrian dictator Assad.

In other parts of Syria today the regime killed a further eight people at funerals of others killed on demonstrations on Friday.

The murder of Mashaal Tammo will harden Kurdish opposition to the Syrian dictatorship. Mashaal Tammo was released from jail two months ago after serving three and a half years. He had been expected to play a prominent role in the umbrella Syrian National Congress. He leaves behind a wife and six children.
