‘PUK only bonds with its members for the salaries’

News and Comment by The Kurdistan Tribune:

The corruption inside in the PUK has become so widespread that some of the most prominent  members and leaders of that party are raising their voices in protest. Burhan Saeed Sofi, a former member of the party leadership who resigned almost three months ago, told the local Lvin newspaper that: ”The only bond the PUK has with its members is the monthly salaries” which are paid by the members’ contributions.  (Politburo and other high-ranking members get $5000 and middle-ranking members get $2500 plus privileges available to them but not to the ordinary membership or the general public).

Sofi went on to say that he does not have any hope that the PUK can reform. He said that the party was born in very different circumstances to today and this is the reason for the difficulties it now faces in the Kurdish struggle. In the 7th March 2010 elections to the Iraqi parliament the PUK could not win a single seat for several reasons, he said. First, the nepotism and cronyism inside the party. Second, the disunity among the members of the PUK Politburo. Third, there is no system of accountability to discipline members who do wrong or reward those who do good. Basically, the PUK apparatus wants to retain members at any cost.

Up to now Burhan Saeed Sofi has not declared his support for any other party.

PUK, KDP and corrupt political parties involved in corruption in Iraqi Kurdistan gear up for an irrepressible revolution! Our students will not brook any more social injustice. Our youths will soon rise up and collapse your dictatorial throne. Our Peshmarga forces will soon declare their full independence.

You are leeching the blood of the poor. Our Anfal, Halabja and Barzani families are succumbing to starvation, passing away due to lack of treatment and freezing to death while you and your accessories are busy pilfering and plundering. You have destroyed the Kurdish nation. You have done nothing absolutely positive. You have failed once again. You are accomplice in the ongoing conspiracy (Turkish-Iranian habitual incursions). All of you are liable and soon you will be summoned to the court of law to account for your wrongs. This is unacceptable. Enough is enough!

An independent agency is required to be formed to launch an immediate probe into the personal accounts and confiscated real estates of all members of parliament, ministries and state institutions, including the PM, and the 2 presidents.

New election dates must be set in Iraqi Kurdistan, and a group of independent intellectuals should be called to form a transitional government to oversee the state of affairs pending announcing new election outcomes.
